L2 Geography
Course Description
The students will study the following themes and topics in Geography course this year.
- A large natural environment – Taupo Volcanic Zone. The content focuses on the creation and eruption of Taupo volcanoes, changes to these landscapes and vegetation over centuries, stretching from Tongariro region to the By of Plenty.
- Geographic topic at a global scale – a range of issues can be chosen for these study (from the deforestation of Amazon Rainforests, Human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, Pacific Garbage Patch, to the formation of Mountains around the globe). Mountains around the globe topic will focus on an in-depth study of tectonics processes and the socio-economic importance of these mountains to the indigenous people and to the people today.
- Geographic Concepts and skills – study will be required to learn, understand and use a range of geographic skills (graphing, map interpretation, cartoon interpretation, photograph annotations, etc) to analyse data and write basic to in-depth reports.
Field trip (Compulsory):
Tongariro Crossing ( Scheduled for March / April)
Recommended Prior Learning
Entry requirements: achievement in NCEA Level 1 Geography (Level 1 Literacy a must) or HLA approval
